Letter Excerpts

"I thank you for your contributions toward my education. If it had not been for the generosity of the Thorn Foundation, I am certain I would not have had nearly as successful of a college career, nor excellent segue into the working world as a result of which."

"I wanted to thank you for providing such a program for the college students in Cecil County. The loan helped (names redacted for privacy purposes) to achieve her dream of becoming a teacher. She is currently a kindergarten teacher in the public school system in Delaware and now has a child of her own."

“I want to start off by saying how appreciative I am of all the support you have provided for me over the last four years. With all of your help I was able to reach my goal and receive a bachelor’s degree in science. Now that I have reached that goal I will begin to pay all of my loans back in the next four years. Starting June 30, 2014, I will make a minimum payment of $600.00 a month until everything is paid off. Again thank you very much for all of the help you have given me.”

“Thank you very much for helping me with student loans through college. This year I earned a 3.80 GPA, and I will graduate this May with a Bachelor of Science degree, concentration in Business Marketing. I have worked hard, but none of this would have been possible without your help. I will always be grateful to Scott & Scott. I now have a part-time job at Nationwide Insurance; it is a big help with expenses. But as I look to the future, I still have more education and expenses ahead of me. I was accepted into the Goldey Beacom Graduate School Business program, and I plan to get my Master’s Degree in Business Marketing. It is a big expense, but a worthwhile one. I would like to ask for your help as I pursue my Master’s Degree. I will work as much as possible, and my parents will help, but your support would be invaluable. Thank you again for all your support, I really appreciate all you do for me and our family.”

“I would like to thank you for helping me obtain my goal of becoming a State Trooper through the generosity of the Columbus W. Thorn, Jr Foundation. I am now a Sophomore at Frostburg State University and am double majoring in Political Science and Criminal Justice. During the summers I work 2 part-time jobs to try to offset some of the costs with the attempt to try to pay for college myself and not rely on my parents to pay for it - they help enough already for me. I also feel that by trying to pay for college I will strive for good grades even more so because I would be wasting my money! I am very appreciative of your generosity. Thanks again.”

“A career in nursing became my passion when I realized that there is no greater gift to give to someone who is going through a trying time then to simply lend a caring hand. As I complete my third year of nursing studies at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Maryland, I am as excited about my career choice as I was 5 years ago when I decided that nursing was for me. When looking back, many moments throughout the past 5 years serve as a reminder of how special and rewarding a career in nursing can be. I have encouraged patients with chronic illnesses to dig deep and find inner strength to push forward, shown compassion to patients who have never known it, and taught families to care for their loved ones when they can no longer do so for themselves. I strive to leave a lasting impression on every patient I care for, as health care will touch every person, at some point, in his or her lives. As a nurse, my overall goal is to always listen and be an advocate for my patients while continuing my education. If it weren’t for the generosity of the Columbus W. Thorn, Jr. Foundation, I wouldn’t be living out my dream. Your aid has played a substantial role in where I stand with my future career and for that I would be delighted to have your support as I finish up my final year of nursing school and take the steps in initiating my career.”

“Once again, thank you for the financial assistance. This is a great benefit for Cecil County students seeking higher education opportunities.”

“Thank you for the college loan. It truly was a blessing. We will try to make a payment of $500.00 monthly until paid in full.”

“I would like to begin by thanking you for providing me financial support through the Thorn Foundation to help with my educational costs at West Virginia University. It has been a tremendous help to me. The program I am in at West Virginia University is a five year program, and I plan to graduate in May 2015 with a Master’s in Education. West Virginia University doesn’t offer a Bachelor’s in Education. I have worked very hard to maintain my cumulative 3.5 GPA in addition to working as a Resident Assistant in the freshman dorms for the past three years. I was offered a Graduate Resident Assistant opportunity and will continue to work in this area in the dorms this coming year. Again, thank you for your financial support in recent years.”

“Thank you for furnishing the opportunity to excel in my academic pursuits. I owe you much gratitude for the financial capacity to obtain my degree.”

“Thank you very much for generously loaning money toward my college education. I obtained my B.A. in Psychology and graduated Summa Cum Laude on May 17, 2014”
